Do you want to be a good writer? If you have been reading this blog, you already know that I am a great advocate for reading and writing. I, therefore, do my best to bring to my readers’ attention to books that will enhance their writing as well as enrich their lives.

Some writers have the gift of writing. This means they have the natural ability to easily, confidently and seamlessly pull you into their writing and force you, through their use of the language, to go on a journey with them. Such writers, carve out a successful career for themselves in no time.

Unfortunately, some of us need a bit of helping hand in mastering the art of good writing.

4 Unbelievable books to read if you want to be a good writer

‘The most important thing is to read as much as you can like I did. It will give you an understanding of what makes good writing and it will enlarge your vocabulary.’ – J.K. Rowling.

It is for this reason I have compiled 4 unbelievable books for you to read if you want to improve your writing.

Here we go…

  1. On Writing by Stephen King

I cannot recommend this book enough. I consider discovering and reading this book last year, a wonderful personal achievement. Thanks to Jon Morrow over at Smart Blogger. If you want to fully gain an insight into Stephen King’s writing journey, read the full article here. The first time I read the book, I was truly amazed.

2.  Reading like a Writer by Francine Prose

As an advocate for reading, the simple but powerful message I get from this book is that reading goes hand in hand with writing. In other words, you have to read to write. This is so true. I read everything, a habit I picked up from my father. I am happy that I succeeded in passing on this habit to my children.

I used to enjoy watching them nod off while I read to them, especially with my daughter. She loved stories of princes and princesses in faraway lands. I will never forget her shiny bright eyes, as she soaked in the stories. Her eyes would gradually dim with tiredness as she finally fell asleep. I loved those moments. They are all grown up now, with their different taste in books. We now recommend and discuss the books we have read.

To improve your writing, just read. Charles Kuralt put it aptly, ‘I believe that writing is derivative. I think good wring comes with good reading.’ I totally agree with Charles.

3. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

This is another classic I can’t recommend enough. If you’re serious about your writing, you have to read this book. Simple! It is a no-nonsense but witty book where she talks about her writing techniques and personal experiences.

4.  Winning the Story Wars By Jonah Sachs

The cover of the book is not the most inspiring and inviting covers out there, but don’t let that stop you. This is where I say, don’t judge this book by its cover. The content and crafting will surprise you. If you want to get traction for writing, this book is for you. It offers advice on how to cut through all the noise and get your work noticed above others.
