5 Ways To Boost Your Writing

In 5 Ways To Boost Your Writing, I will discuss 5 sure fire ways to help with your writing.

What tools do you value most for your writing? Your laptop or desktop of course. I have also come to value the use of a dairy, writing pads and Anne Lamott’s Bird By Bird, since I started writing again.

Yes, I am back to my blogging and writing duties as you can see from 1O Essential Things To Take On Holiday, 10 Ways To Keep Your Children Busy In Summer  and 15 Benefits of Bikram Yoga.    If you follow by blog, you would have noticed that I did not post any articles until recently.

You know why?

If I’m honest, I think I became overwhelmed by trying to do many things at the same time.  I am a mother of three and a wife. I kept a full time job while also pursuing and a masters degree. Something had to give. Blogging did. But I knew I was coming back to it.

During my absence, I asked myself these questions- why do people blog? and how do you ensure that you keep blogging and remain relevant? When I ventured into the unknown world of blogging it was to promote my Networking business and my self published books, but I didn’t have the right approach. I treated it as something I was doing for fun.  I was not serious. I was not blogging regularly to promote and advertise my business and before long I saw no reason to blog at all. . Yes, I was overwhelmed at the time but I also did not have a plan.

The truth is I started a business to earn an income and I intend to do so.

So here I am- again. This time I intend to it treat differently, like a business. That way I will be more disciplined and focused.

I know many people blog for different reasons and set targets for what works for them. If you are struggling, you are not alone. Step back and re-evaluate your situation and start again. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T STOP! It will pay off in the long run.

Here are my 5 Tips to boost your writing–

  1. Create a Diary

Find a particular time in the day to write, even if it is for 10 minutes. Treat this time as another appointment in your diary and keep it. I write best in the mornings. I used to say that I couldn’t  find time to write. That was just an excuse. Now I can write even when I am commuting. The truth is, if you really want to write, you will find the time and channel your energy towards it.

2.  Get the right tools

All you really need is your laptop and internet and you are good to go. When I am commuting, I carry my Ipad  but in the absence of this, I use my writing pads. It doesn’t really matter where you write and how bad you think it is at the time. You can always edit later. The important thing is to put pen to paper. My son, who blogs at Improving Slowly, recently gave me Anne Lamott’s book, Bird by Bird, when I complained of my lack of motivation to write. It is a great book. You should get it.

3.  Create tight deadlines

Pretend that you have only 30 minutes to write for that day. This will spur you on to sit down and write in other to meet that deadline. It works for me. You never know, you could write a book in the process.

4. Get rid of any distractions

Turn off the television, phones, social media and buckle down.  You may want to tell your friends not to try and contact you at certain times. Some of my friends used to wonder why they couldn’t contact me during weekends when I was writing my three books. Do what is necessary to keep distractions at bay. You have to hold yourself accountable.

5. Finally, reward yourself

Yes, turn on the TV, eat , take a walk, call your friends, take a yoga class– anything to give your brain a break. And then do the same thing all over again! When you are not doing any of the above things, read and read some more. Reading other people’s work will help refocus your mind and push you towards your goal. When I am not doing any of the above things, I read blogs and anything Lee Childs.

  1. Hi,
    I love your graphic.
My favorite tip of your article was when you told us to pretend we are writing on a time crunch. Great idea which I never thought of.
